The Power Of SEO For New Webmasters SEO For Beginners

By Michael Fleischner

Search engine optimization can be a daunting task for anyone new to the Internet. When I was first starting out, there weren't many resources to help me understand the basics of search engine optimization and what specifically I needed to do to get my website off page 3 of Google. As a result, I'd like to provide a basic overview of SEO and how it works.

Fundamentally, search engine optimization is the study of how search engines work. With a basic understanding of how search engines rank various websites, you can quickly discover the most beneficial techniques for improving your own website's ranking. When thinking about SEO, short for search engine optimization, focus your efforts on major search engines. Their algorithms and methods for ranking drive the results of smaller search engines and the majority of Internet traffic.

So what exactly is search engine optimization and why does it matter. Search engine optimization, or SEO refers to both the art and science of search engine rankings. What you are doing, or not doing online, has a direct impact on where your website or blog shows up when users type a search term on Yahoo! or other major search engines. What influences those rankings is referred to as SEO and influences your results.

Search engines work based on algorithms. When a user goes to MSN and types in a keyword phrase, that search engine returns a variety of results related to the keyword term. How does it do that? Hard to say since all search engines work differently. The key is that results are somehow related to your search term.

Okay, so what's under the hood of today's most popular search engines. Similar to McDonald's secret sauce, search engines do not reveal the precise methodology used to rank websites and search engine results. If they did, everyone would have the #1 ranking. The good news however is that many of these search algorithms have lots in common. In fact, building search engine optimized websites are easier today than ever before.

Everyone wants to know the one single thing they can do to improve their website ranking. The fact of the matter is that SEO is complex and there are many factors that go into determining the ranking of a website. That said, there are a number of principles you can use to positively impact your rankings and this is commonly referred to as SEO best practices. These best practices are widely reported on the internet and are essential for top placements.

Search engine optimization provides a thorough explanation of how to design your website, how to improve your Google PR, and most importantly, how to increase ranking based on an in-bound linking strategy. In fact, there are informational products and services out there that do nothing other than coach you on the best methods to develop links to your website.

Regardless of where you are in relation to your knowledge of SEO, know that common SEO methods exist. Do you research and learn the best methods for improving your search engine ranking. Apply the most basic techniques and watch your ranking improve. The key is to remain consistent and apply these techniques over and over again. Good rankings are built over time.
