Making Paid Search More Effective

Paid search is a great way to get web traffic to your site from the major search engines. It also can drain your marketing budget in very quickly if not done properly. Someone is going to profit from your paid search campaign. Is it going to be the search engines or or us? Search engines make their money from clicks on our ads. The more clicks on our ads the more money they get. The real goal should be "more conversions with less clicks and lower cost". Here are some strategies that should help.

1. Turn off "Content Network" when you first set up a your campaign. The default setting "on". The "Content Network" represents most of the loss in paid search. Content Network presents your ads on websites that are using AdSense. If you go to a website and see "Ads by Google", those ads are coming from Google paid search accounts. The content of the website determine the ads that show up on these sites. Consider the following before turning on the content match. One, the website that is hosting our ad gets paid every time someone clicks on the ad. Secondly, most people who click on these ads are doing research. The great thing about search engine marketing is that you come in contact with individuals who are actively searching for what you have to offer, pay for clicks that come from people in that category.

2. Use the most specific terms possible. In most cases the more general the term, less qualified the lead and the more the cost. Try to figure out which terms work best to get the ideal customer to the site.

3. Keyword "types" There are three types of keywords "Broad", "Phrase" and "Exact". The rule of thumb that I use is: for single word phrases, use exact match and for search phrases that are two to three words, used "phrase matching". I am also experimenting with using "exact" matching for these terms as well. The more specific the search term is to what you are offering and who your ideal client is, the more qualified to lead will be. Better a small number of qualified leads than a large number of leads that waste your time and ultimately cost a lot more money.

4. Just a couple thoughts on writing creatives (ad copy). Use the following in your "headline" box: keyword: "your main keyword. This will put your keyword phrase into the headline. You want to attract only your ideal client (someone who is looking for exactly what you have to offer) so be specific. Add at least one of your "unique selling propositions". This can be very challenging because of the space limitations. Rule of thumb, find out what your competitors are doing and do something different. For example, if everyone is offering free shipping, use one of your other unique selling propositions.

5. Landing pages require a great deal of thought. Landing page have one purpus, answer the questions that are on the mind of the searcher, the reason for the search. He entered his search terms because he has a problem, needs a solution or is in some kind of "pain". You have about two seconds to convince him that you understand what he is going through and what he needs. You must show him that you possess the answers to his needs. Don't just send them to your home page unless your home page can accomplish the above. Once you connect with your searcher you must have a call to action. You must be very specific and clear about the next steps. Have your "phone number" or "contact us button" on every page.

6. Tracking. Finally, track everything. Paid search is not an exact science. It takes time to set up and optimized your campaigns to get the results that you are looking for. You must monitor your campaigns at least weekly in order to catch market changes. Google, Yahoo and MSN have free tracking tools that work great.

There is good money in paid search, if done correctly. If you are new to this or do not have several hours a week, it might be a lot cheaper to find someone who knows what they are doing to help you rather than lose thousands of dollars trying to figure it out yourself.

Let them hear it from you first-Be the first to break the "big" story. Stay on the cutting edge. Subscribe to magazines, trade journals, or any source of up-to-the-minute happenings in your niche. Try to be the one who gives them "the scoop".

Provide a free tool or piece of software-This can really make the back links show up! If you are unable (like me!) to produce the tool or software, you can always buy it or pay someone to code it for you. The more useful and "used" the tool or software the more links it will generate.

Provide a list of links to high value sites or resources-Give your visitors links to more info, or more resources on your niche. Try to make your list the most complete, or the very best list available, try to stand out for the pack!

Give stuff away-Everybody wants free stuff (I know I do!) So give it to them, and they will share it with their friends. The more value you can give away the more links you'll find showing up.

Put these techniques to work for you in most every thing you write, posts, articles, etc. and you will begin to find back links showing up with regularity. Remember these kind of unsolicited, natural back links are some of the most valuable links there are!

Protect Your Website Ranking

SEO has helped your website achieve an enviable ranking. This has helped your overall marketing campaign and you are happy. But this is not the time to be complacent. The internet is full of scamsters. There are many webmasters who use unethical methods to cheat search engines to think their website is popular.

Search engines have figured this out. Now special software is used to detect such sites and then these sites are either given lower rankings or banned altogether. However this system is far from perfect. Some good and legitimate sites have also been banned by search engines mistakenly. You must take measures so that your website is not caught mistakenly as unethical.

First of all, check your back links. Your back links should come from pages that are not unethical. They must not be coming from Link Farms and other such sources. Quality Links from sources that are relevant to your site and business are preferable and offer you protection from penalties. Your links should, in short, come from respectable sources so that you do not fall under the bad neighbourhood criteria of Google.

The easiest way to check this is to download the Google toolbar. Check your backlinks against the Pagerank feature. Greyed out pages are penalized. Ones that show green are safe, even if it is a tiny little bit of green. These pages are relatively new, and who knows, they may grown in value slowly.

You should continue to monitor your links regularly.

Cloaking is another dangerous practise indulged in by unethical webmasters. This means inserting keywords in pages that cannot be read by human eye. Using white text on white background is a common way of cloaking. This means that visitors do not read the text which is kept for the benefit of search engines. However, if search engines get to know this, the web site page ranking does not get a boost. It plummets down or the website gets banned.

But the search engine bots are not human. If you love grey fonts and use them liberally and have a greyish kind of web page, the bot might mistakenly assume you are being unethical and ban your website. Do not, ever, use same background color and font, even though you think it looks lovely and artistic. Play safe.

May be you have researched and found the perfect key words for your site. You love them. It is easy to go overboard and sprinkle them a bit too generously in your text. This is quite understandable. But understand that search engines have a set formula or ratio for keyword density. If your key word ratio is high, you may be penalized for key word stuffing.

Ensure that your content contains key words, but the flow is natural. Using 3% of keyword density in a page is enough.

Another way of cloaking is when human visitors are directed to one page and the search engine bot to another page that is unintelligent to human eye. Here the bot is fed with key words, links and other things the webmaster deems necessary for high page ranking. This can get you banned permanently.

If you are serious about your reputation and standing as an internet marketer, you will ensure that such practises are not employed in your website. Do not resort to trickery and deception to artificially boost your ranking.

I have found that the most effective way to drive other sites to pay attention to your own is by using the word free. You will, of course, need to back that word up as well.
